The 2 products you need to defrizz your wavy hair

Wavy hair is somewhat of an enigma. It’s not curly, but it’s definitely not straight. Us wavy-haired gals exist somewhere in the middle, and it can be difficult to find the right products to tame frizz and smooth out waves without weighing them down. So, working out a hair care routine for wavy hair means a lot of trial and error to find the right products. Luckily, I’ve been able to do some of that trial and error for you, by trying out a few products suited to wavy hair types.

Murphy’s Beauty stock an extensive range of hair care products for all hair types from straight to coiled, and I’ve handpicked some of the best wavy hair products they have to offer. I love that they stock such an extensive range of hair products that are great for ethnic hair types too. I tried out the OGX Quenching Coconut Styling Milk and Palmer's Olive Oil Formula Deep Conditioner, to see if they have what it takes to defrizz and condition my wavy hair.

What products are best for wavy hair?

Wavy hair comes in all colours, lengths and textures, but one thing they all have in common is frizz. This stubborn hair issue is rooted in a lack of moisture in the hair, so it starts to seek hydration from the air around it. So whatever products you choose for your wavy hair, you’ll want to find something to calm frizz and moisturise your tresses.

The OGX Quenching Coconut Styling Milk proved to be a great de-frizzer for my wavy hair. Its milky texture wasn’t too heavy, went on smoothly and smelt like a holiday in a bottle. I have quite long hair, so I used two pumps in the main length of my hair, avoiding the roots and scrunching from the bottom after working it through my hair. This helps to form waves and loose curls and bring back some volume into your hair after applying styling products. The styling milk is best applied to damp, clean hair, so I used it after washing and towel-drying my hair.

After applying the curling milk to my hair and scrunching my waves from the bottom-up for about a minute, I let my hair air dry naturally. I noticed that my waves were way more defined and had a great bounce to them. This was down to the lightweight formula of the styling milk that didn’t weigh my hair down but defined my waves.

Often I can find that hydrating hair products are synonymous with having quite heavy formulas. Whilst this is great for curlier and thicker hair types, the weight of many hydrating creams end up weighing down my hair and making my waves look limp. But this curling cream delivered a good level of hydration without pulling down my curls.

I also used a small amount of the product on my hair as a little pick-me-up in between washes. It was great for refreshing my waves and providing some extra nourishment to keep my hair feeling smooth and hydrated.

Before: my hair is dull and limp After: my waves are more defined and smooth.

Pros:

  • Tropical scent
  • Lightweight formula
  • Left my hair feeling soft and silky

Cons:

  • I still had some frizz around the top of my head

Overall I would definitely recommend this product for wavy-haired gals, but don’t expect it to take away 100% of your frizz.

A deep conditioning treatment for wavy hair

Seeing as dehydration causes frizzy hair, investing in a deep conditioning every now and then is great for frizz-prone wavy hair. Using a deep conditioning treatment once a week helps to replenish moisture levels in the hair and avoid frizzing. Murphy’s stock a great range of enriching hair treatments, so I was positively spoilt for choice. I was caught between an OGX Argan Oil Intense Moisturizing Treatment and a Palmer's Olive Oil Formula Deep Conditioner, as both argan oil and olive are great moisturisers. In the end, I went for the Palmer’s conditioner as I’d never tried an olive oil hair treatment before.

I applied about half of the sachet all over my hair, working the product into the roots but mostly into the length of my hair, then left it for 3 minutes as instructed on the packet. The consistency of the conditioner was thick and creamy, and even before I put it on my hair I knew I was in for a treat. Once I washed it out, my hair felt super soft, which I had expected. What I didn’t expect was how strong my hair felt. It was as if there was a layer of protection around each lock and even after one use, my hair felt thicker.

I also noticed that my occasionally flaky scalp was nowhere to be seen, which was a great added bonus of using this product.

My hair the day after using the mask - thick and bouncy waves!

Pros:

  • Very purse friendly
  • A paraben and fragrance-free formula
  • 100% olive oil and Jamaican castor oil
  • Hair feels soft and strong after one use

Cons:

  • Non-resealable packaging meant it was difficult to store the extra conditioner

This is a wavy hair must-have for restoring strength and hydration - and at £2-odd a sachet, your purse won’t complain either!
